When you come to sell or scrap a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV), or any other type of vehicle, you need to follow some steps to notify DVLA that you’re no longer the owner of it. At Mammoth Salvage, we specialise in the collection and disposal of HGVs of every size.
To notify the DVLA that your HGV has been sold or scrapped, you must officially update the vehicle’s record and cancel its Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). The quickest way is to complete the transfer on GOV.UK. Alternatively, you can notify them by post.
To complete the online form, you’ll need the following
Go to the GOV.UK Tell the DVLA you’ve sold, transferred or bought a vehicle page, select the option stating you sold/transferred it to a motor trader/dismantler, and fill in the required details.
Instant confirmation – you’ll see a message and receive an email confirming the vehicle is no longer registered to you, and that your HGV tax has been cancelled.
To notify DVLA by post you’ll need the V5C.
Locate the yellow section of your V5C logbook (Section 4 or 9, depending on the version) and fill in the name and address of the scrap yard. Post the completed section to DVLA Swansea, SA99 1BD.
Wait for confirmation – DVLA will post you a letter confirming that you are no longer the registered keeper of the vehicle.
V5C – Hand the rest of the V5C logbook to the buyer or scrap yard, but ensure you keep the yellow section for your own records.
When scrapping, get a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) or Notifcation of Destruction (NoD) – The ATF must issue a CoD or NoD to you as formal, legal proof that the HGV has been scrapped. You should keep this indefinitely.
Claiming road tax refunds – Notifying the DVLA of the sale or scrappage will automatically cancel your vehicle tax. Any full, unused months of tax will be refunded to the registered keeper.
Ministry plates – Remember to return or handle any active HGV ministry plates and plating certificates associated with the vehicle through the HGV and trailer ministry plates and plating certificates process if necessary.
